The Literal Meaning of Genesis

Our likeness to God cannot be holy if we wish to be like Him in such a way as to rest in ourselves from our works as He rested in himself from His work. For we must rest in an immutable God, that is, in Him who made us. This will be our most exalted state of rest, a truly holy state, free from all pride. Just as He rested from all His works because He Himself, and not His works, is His good and the source of His happiness, so we must hope that we shall find rest only Him from all works, whether ours or His; and this is what we must desire after our good works, which, though taking place in us, we recognize as His.

Augustine
